Two astronauts begin a historic one-year mission aboard the International Space Station
In short: NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and Roscosmos cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko have arrived at the International Space Station. Their mission marks the start of a year-long study into how extended spaceflight impacts the human body, providing critical data for future long-duration exploration.
On March 27, 2015, Scott Kelly, Gennady Padalka, and Mikhail Kornienko docked with the International Space Station after a six-hour journey from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. They were greeted by the existing crew, including Commander Terry Virts, Anton Shkaplerov, and Samantha Cristoforetti.
This mission is significant for its focus on human physiology. By spending a full year in orbit, Kelly and Kornienko serve as subjects for research aimed at understanding the physical toll of long-duration space travel, a necessary step for preparing humans for deeper space missions.
