Why two astronauts are spending an entire year aboard the International Space Station
In short: NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko have embarked on a year-long mission to the International Space Station. This extended stay is a critical step in preparing for future deep-space exploration, providing essential data on how the human body and mind endure long-duration spaceflight.
Launched on March 27 alongside Expedition 43 crewmate Gennady Padalka, Kelly and Kornienko are testing the limits of human physiology in orbit. Their mission serves as a foundational component of NASA’s broader Journey to Mars, helping researchers understand the physical and mental hurdles inherent in missions to asteroids or the Red Planet.
Beyond this long-duration study, the mission highlights ongoing agency efforts, including the Asteroid Redirect Mission concept, the success of the Orion EFT-1 program, and recent recognition for the Kepler team.
