Planetary science is the ultimate multidisciplinary study of our cosmic neighborhood
In short: What does it actually take to study other worlds? Dr. Marcella Yant of Lockheed Martin explains how planetary science bridges the gap between Earth science and deep space exploration.
Planetary science is a vast field covering the physical and chemical nature of bodies within our Solar System and across extrasolar systems. It examines everything from planetary formation and orbital mechanics to the internal processes, surface features, and atmospheres of distant worlds.
Because the field is so complex, it requires a mastery of diverse disciplines. To understand these phenomena, scientists must integrate knowledge from astronomy, astrophysics, earth science, meteorology, space science, plasma physics, chemistry, and biology. Dr. Yant, a Deep Space Planetary Senior Research Scientist, applies this multidisciplinary approach to her work in geochemistry, mineralogy, and infrared spectroscopy.
