In short: The ISS Progress 48 is making its departure to make room for its successor. This routine orbital maneuver is a critical logistical step in maintaining the station's supply chain.

On February 9, the Progress 48 resupply ship departed from the Pirs docking compartment of the Russian segment of the International Space Station. To prepare the docking area for Progress 50, which is set to depart Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome on 11 February, this craft must leave.

The departing spacecraft carried nearly 3 tons of essential cargo, including food, fuel, and experiment hardware for the six crew members. After departing the station, the ship will leave orbit three hours later and burn up over the Pacific Ocean.
