How Sentinel-3 builds on a legacy of Earth observation missions

Sentinel-3: Technology and heritage · 4:04 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: This video explores the engineering and heritage of the Sentinel-3 mission. Discover how this satellite uses proven technology to monitor our oceans, land, ice, and atmosphere as part of the Copernicus programme.

Orbiting at 815 kilometres, the Sentinel-3A and -3B satellites follow a near polar, sun-synchronous path. These instruments are designed to collect high-quality ocean measurements, including sea surface temperature, sea surface height, and global ocean colour.

Beyond the oceans, the mission provides critical data on air quality, clouds, fires, and land. This technological craftsmanship is built upon the scientific heritage of earlier missions, specifically ERS, Envisat, and Cryosat. To ensure data continuity into the 2030s, the European Commission and ESA plan to launch two additional satellites, Sentinel-3C and -3D.
