A rare perspective from the engines of the space shuttle

Shuttle's Twin Boosters Supply Stunning Views · 40:28 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: Watch the launch of the space shuttle Atlantis from a vantage point few ever see: the tops of its own twin solid rocket boosters. This footage captures the mission's beginning as the shuttle headed toward the International Space Station.

The video features footage recorded by cameras mounted directly atop the twin solid rocket boosters (SRBs). These boosters provided the primary propulsion to lift the shuttle into orbit on May 14. Because the SRBs are reusable, they were recovered from the Atlantic Ocean roughly 140 miles from the Kennedy Space Center following the STS-132 mission.

The footage offers a unique visual record of the ascent and the transition to the International Space Station, where the crew—including Commander Ken Ham and Pilot Tony Antonelli—conducted their mission before the shuttle's return flight.
