How astronauts in orbit connect with students on Earth

Space station crew members share experiences in space with Challenger Center students · 20:29 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: While orbiting the planet, Expedition 44 crew members Scott Kelly and Kjell Lindgren engaged in a live 20-minute downlink with students. This direct connection between the International Space Station and the Challenger Center National Conference provides an authentic look at the scientific complexities of life in space.

On August 13, NASA astronauts Scott Kelly and Kjell Lindgren participated in an in-flight educational event from the International Space Station. During the Challenger Center National Conference in San Antonio, Texas, a live 20-minute space-to-Earth link reached the public and students. This initiative is a key part of the NASA Education Office's strategy to enhance STEM teaching and learning across the United States by providing students with a live, authentic experience of space exploration. The broadcast was aired via NASA Television and the agency's official website. This session took place at the McAllister Auditorium at San Antonio College.

Lindgren had spent three weeks on the station by then, having landed on July 23 for his initial six-month stint. Kelly was in the fifth month of a year-long mission alongside Russian crewmate Mikhail Kornienko. Their mission involves conducting more than 250 science investigations across various disciplines, including biology, Earth science, physical sciences, technology development, and human research.

The research conducted by the crew, including Kelly and Kornienko, is vital for future exploration. Specifically, they are gathering biomedical data that will help scientists formulate the requirements for a human mission to Mars. Beyond the active crew, the event featured insights from former astronauts like Kent Rominger and Joe Acaba, as well as Dr. The National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) chief scientist, Graham Scott. The session also included contributions from Mark Kelly. Additionally, the crew members are performing over 250 scientific studies.
