Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko are spending one full year aboard the space station.
In short: NASA flight engineer Scott Kelly discusses his ongoing year-long mission aboard the International Space Station. This session highlights the biomedical research being conducted in orbit to prepare humanity for future crewed journeys to Mars.
During a May 6 session, Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko answered questions from the Today Show and social media followers. The duo is currently in the second month of a mission that began in 2015 and is scheduled to conclude in March 2016.
The primary objective of this extended stay is the collection of biomedical data. By observing the effects of long-duration spaceflight on the human body, researchers aim to build the necessary knowledge base for eventual human exploration of Mars.
