How astronauts communicate their orbital lives back to Earth
In short: From Houston-based television interviews to official NASA podcasts, the connection between the International Space Station and Earth is vital. Whether studying the effects of weightlessness or preparing for missions to Mars, these live dialogues offer a rare window into the lives of the explorers living and working in orbit.
Communication between the International Space Station (ISS) and Earth serves both public engagement and scientific necessity. On 28 December, Expedition 46's Scott Kelly and Tim Kopra joined ESA's Tim Peake for televised talks with Houston's KHOU-TV and KPRC-TV. At that time, Kelly was nearing the end of a year-long mission designed to study how long-duration weightlessness affects the human body, while Kopra and Peake were in the early stages of a six-month mission.
Beyond television, NASA utilizes specialized media to document the human side of spaceflight. The Johnson Space Center's official podcast, 'Houston We Have a Podcast,' provides a platform for astronauts and engineers to discuss the complexities of orbital life. In episode 438, recorded during July and August 2026, members of the SpaceX Crew-13 mission shared their personal journeys and mission expectations. This crew included NASA's Jessica Watkins, Luke Delaney, Canadian Space Agency's Joshua Kutryk, and Roscosmos's Sergey Teteryatnikov.
These missions are part of a continuous human presence aboard the ISS that has lasted for over 25 years. As crews like Crew-13 prepare to launch aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, named Grace, they do so with the goal of advancing human spaceflight toward even more distant targets like the Moon and Mars. The work performed by these specialists, such as Watkins—a geologist with a doctorate from UCLA who previously studied the Martian surface—is essential to understanding how humans can survive and thrive in the harsh environment of space.
