The first US military woman in space holds a world record
In short: Susan Helms didn't just break barriers; she redefined the limits of human endurance in orbit. From her first flight in 1993 to a record-breaking spacewalk, her career spans the transition from the Shuttle era to the International Space Station, culminating in a prestigious induction into the Astronaut Hall of Fame.
Susan Helms' journey into orbit began with her selection by NASA in January 1990, leading to her official designation as an astronaut in July 1991. On January 13, 1993, while serving as an Air Force Major aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour (STS-54), she made history as the first woman from the United States military to fly in space. This milestone set the stage for a prolific career that included four additional Space Shuttle missions (STS-64, STS-78, and STS-101) and a pivotal role on the International Space Station (ISS).
During her 2001 mission as a member of the Expedition-2 crew, Helms performed a spacewalk that lasted 8 hours and 56 minutes. This duration established a world record for the longest spacewalk ever conducted at that time. Over the course of her five space flights, she logged a total of 211 days in space, accumulating 5,064 total hours of orbital experience. Her technical expertise was rooted in her background as a flight test engineer for aircraft including the F-15, F-16, and CF-18.
Beyond her time in orbit, Helms transitioned into high-level military leadership. With nearly 36 years of service in the United States Air Force, she eventually rose to the rank of Lieutenant General. She commanded the 14th Air Force and the Joint Functional Component Command for Space, where she led over 20,500 personnel. In these roles, she oversaw critical national interests, including missile warning, satellite operations, and space launch. Her career reflects a rare synthesis of operational flight experience, orbital exploration, and massive-scale strategic command.
She remains a key figure in the industry by leading Orbital Visions, LLC as its Principal and working as a freelancer, alongside holding roles within esteemed groups such as the National Academy of Engineering.
