A 286-day odyssey home from the International Space Station

Suni Set to Return on This Week @NASA · 13:20 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore are finally returning to Earth after a journey that lasted nearly ten months. What was intended to be a week-long trip turned into an unplanned marathon of orbital travel, testing the limits of endurance and logistical planning in low Earth orbit.

The return of NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore marks the end of a complex saga that began with technical failures. Originally scheduled to spend only about a week in space following their June 5 launch on Boeing's Starliner crew capsule, the duo faced numerous problems during transit. These issues were significant enough that NASA ultimately sent the Starliner back empty, transferring the test pilots to SpaceX for an alternative return route.

The journey was further extended by SpaceX capsule complications, which delayed their departure until March 2025. Consequently, Williams and Wilmore spent a total of 286 days in space—an duration that exceeded their original expectations by 278 days. During this extended stay, they circled the Earth 4,576 times and covered a distance of approximately 121 million miles (195 million kilometers).

The final homecoming occurred on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, via a SpaceX capsule that splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Tallahassee. They were joined by NASA's Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov, who had arrived in a separate SpaceX capsule the previous fall with two seats reserved for the stranded pair. The mission concluded with a routine medical check-up following their arrival.

While some sources highlight the specific splashdown on March 18, other documentation notes different return logistics involving Soyuz capsules and landings in Kazakhstan. These discrepancies reflect the various logistical paths available for returning crew members from the International Space Station depending on the specific mission profile and vehicle availability.
