Cosmology seeks to understand the universe as a unified whole

In short: While astronomy looks at individual objects, cosmology takes a step back to view the entire cosmic system of matter and energy. It is the study of the universe's large-scale features—most notably its expansion—which only becomes visible when we look beyond the small scales of our daily lives.

Cosmology serves as a bridge between various natural sciences, primarily merging astronomy and physics. Its core objective is to understand the physical universe not as a collection of isolated parts, but as a unified whole. A defining characteristic of this field is the study of cosmological expansion, a dramatic feature that emerges only when observing the universe on a massive scale.

A key distinction in cosmology is the difference between the 'observable universe' and the universe itself. The observable universe is essentially a bubble of space centered on Earth, containing everything humans can theoretically see with current technology. In contrast, the universe as a whole may be infinite and lack any spatial edges, encompassing all matter and energy beyond our reach.

To navigate these vast distances, astronomers use light-travel time as a standard unit of measurement because actual physical separations are so enormous. For context, the speed of light in a vacuum is 3 × 10^10 centimetres per second—fast enough to circle the Earth seven times in just one second. This scale allows scientists to study everything from our local Milky Way Galaxy to the furthest reaches of the cosmos.

The pursuit of these answers is supported by premier research institutions like the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs). These institutes focus on a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to basic sciences, providing the rigorous training in physics and mathematics necessary to tackle the complexities of cosmological study.
