When the entire universe was smaller than a single particle

Andreas Albrecht - What is Quantum Cosmology? · 7:09 · Video: Closer To Truth · Watch at the source

In short: Quantum mechanics governs the subatomic, while cosmology explores the infinite reaches of space. But in the earliest moments of existence, these two realms collided. To understand our origins, scientists must treat the totality of the universe as a quantum wave function, exploring the fundamental features of space and time.

Quantum cosmology emerges from a profound paradox: at the dawn of time, the entire universe was compressed into a volume smaller than the smallest known particle. This necessitates a marriage between two traditionally separate fields—quantum mechanics (the physics of the utterly small) and cosmology (the study of the utterly large). This research seeks to uncover the specific quantum features of space and time. It represents a fundamental shift in how we perceive existence.

A pivotal moment in this field occurred in 1982 when Andreas Albrecht and Paul Steinhardt proposed "slow roll" inflation. While early theories suggested that the universe expanded at an extraordinary rate, they lacked a mechanism to explain how that expansion ended to leave behind a uniform distribution of matter and energy. The 'slow roll' model provided a solution where the expansion occurred over a tiny fraction of a second but concluded gradually enough to result in the smooth, balanced universe we observe today. Albrecht first entered this field by chance during his graduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He originally sought an advisor in particle physics but ended up pursuing cosmology instead.

Despite its success as a tool for analyzing cosmic data and connecting it to fundamental physics, Albrecht maintains a stance of intellectual humility. He doubts if the universe's initial, highly ordered condition can be entirely attributed to inflation. He warns against the 'party line' that these deep questions are solved, suggesting instead that cosmology is a field defined by major changes and significant unanswered questions. The theory has been validated as a powerful tool for interpreting cosmic data. Nevertheless, Albrecht doubts if this account clarifies how the cosmos started in a state of such exact equilibrium.
