The luxury minivan that redefined the concept of a private lounge
In short: Lexus didn't just build a car; they engineered a mobile sanctuary. The LM, or "Luxury Mover," takes the architecture of a high-end suite and puts it on wheels. From dual-pane windows to a climate concierge, it is designed to isolate the passenger from the outside world entirely.
The Lexus LM entered the market in 2019 as the brand's first minivan, specifically designed to cater to a growing demand for high-end transport. While it shares a lineage with the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire, the LM is distinguished by its exclusive luxury focus. The first generation, released in China in 2020, featured specialized configurations like the "Emperor Suite," a four-seater layout based on the Alphard Royal Lounge variant. It also introduced Swing Valve suspension technology to enhance ride quality.
The second generation, debuting in April 2023, represents a significant shift in both engineering and global availability. While the first generation was restricted to China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia, the second generation expanded to Europe, Australia, India, and Japan. This new iteration moved further away from the Alphard/Vellfire by adopting a separate model code and distinct bodywork. Notably, Lexus transitioned the entire lineup to hybrid powertrains, offering the LM 350h and the more powerful LM 500h, which utilizes the Direct4 electric four-wheel drive system.
Inside, the LM introduces several Lexus firsts, such as the "Rear Climate Concierge"—a centralized hub for air conditioning, sunshades, and lighting—alongside heated armrests and ottomans. The vehicle is engineered for extreme quietude, utilizing stronger structural components and dual-pane windows to create a serene environment. Despite its premium positioning, it remains unavailable in North America, maintaining its status as a specialized luxury mover for international markets.
