From metal frontwoman to solo artist: the multifaceted career of Alissa White-Gluz
In short: Known for her powerful blend of growling and clean vocals, Alissa White-Gluz has defined modern metal for over a decade. After a transformative tenure leading Arch Enemy, she is now pivoting toward a solo career and new collaborations, all while maintaining a steadfast commitment to her vegan and straight-edge lifestyle.
Born in Montreal in 1985, Alissa White-Gluz first gained prominence as a founding member of the metalcore band The Agonist. Her career took a major turn in 2014 when she was invited to replace Angela Gossow as the lead vocalist for the Swedish melodic death metal band Arch Enemy. Over the next eleven years, she fronted the group for four studio albums, including War Eternal and Blood Dynasty, before announcing her departure in November 2025 to pursue solo projects.
White-Gluz is known for a versatile vocal range that bridges extreme metal and melodic styles. This flexibility has made her a sought-after guest collaborator across the heavy metal spectrum, from power metal acts like Kamelot and DragonForce to symphonic metal groups like Delain. Her influence extends beyond music; she is a dedicated activist who has been vegan since 1998 and follows a straight-edge lifestyle. Her advocacy includes PETA campaigns against seal hunting and fishing, and she served as an executive producer for the 2024 documentary I Could Never Go Vegan.
Beyond her primary band work, White-Gluz has explored diverse creative outlets, including voice acting for the video game Gears 5 and appearing in visual projects like American Murder Song. As she transitions into her solo career under the moniker 'Alissa,' she aims to strip back her sound, focusing on honesty and simplicity. This evolution reflects her long-standing appreciation for the raw, unpolished aesthetic of 1990s grunge, a genre she credits for shaping her musical values alongside the social consciousness of punk rock.
