How a time-traveling hero's paradox nearly shattered the Marvel multiverse
In short: To stop a robot apocalypse, Wolverine traveled back in time to assassinate the man who created it. But his actions triggered a butterfly effect so severe it replaced the robot's reign with a magical conquest, forcing a desperate moral choice to prevent reality from collapsing.
The 'Age of Ultron' storyline began in 2013 following the reactivation of Ultron by the Intelligencia. The villainous robot eventually conquered Earth, deploying Ultron Sentinels to patrol the streets. To combat this, heroes like Iron Man and Nick Fury devised a plan to use Doctor Doom's Time Platform to travel into the future and defeat Ultron before his conquest could occur.
Simultaneously, Wolverine and the Invisible Woman traveled to the past with a different objective: to kill Hank Pym before he could ever create Ultron. However, this intervention created a divergent timeline where Pym's death led to a world ruled by Morgan le Fay and Doctor Doom. In this reality, the Avengers had broken up, and the Savage Land was overrun by crashed ships from a Kree-Skrull war. The heroes realized that ripping the space-time continuum this way was causing reality to fracture.
The resolution required a complex temporal maneuver. The present-day Wolverine traveled to the past to stop his previous self from killing Pym. Instead of an assassination, Pym agreed to install a fail-safe to destroy Ultron. To preserve the original timeline and avoid living with the memories of the ruined future, the present Wolverine had his past self kill him. This restored the present, though the effort left massive tears across the multiverse, leaving Pym to rededicate himself to superheroics as Ant-Man.
The narrative highlights the high stakes of temporal mechanics: while the 'Age of Ultron' was a primary inspiration for the 2015 MCU film, the comic version explored deeper philosophical questions regarding the 'butterfly effect.' It posited that the destruction caused by one villain (Ultron) was potentially less catastrophic than the unintended consequences of trying to erase his existence from history.
