In short: Born from the urgency of the Cold War, the Conqueror was a massive response to new Soviet armor. While its 120 mm gun offered devastating long-range support, the vehicle's immense weight and complex turret created a trade-off between raw firepower and battlefield reliability.

The Conqueror's development was driven by the emergence of the Soviet IS-3 heavy tank. Originally part of the 1944 A45 program intended as a heavy infantry tank, the project shifted through several iterations, including a 'Universal Tank' concept known as FV200. By 1949, the universal chassis concept was abandoned due to escalating costs and the inefficiency of short production runs, but the need for a heavy gun tank remained.

To meet the urgent requirement for a 120 mm armament, engineers repurposed existing hull designs. This led to the production of the FV 221 Caernarvon Mark I in 1952, which used Centurion Mk 3 turrets for chassis development. The first pre-production Conquerors finally entered trials with the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) in 1955.

The tank's firepower relied on the Royal Ordnance L1 120 mm gun, which used two-piece ammunition in brass cartridges. This design offered safety advantages but limited shell capacity to 35 rounds. To manage the massive turret and hull, the tank utilized an advanced rotating commander's cupola with a built-in coincidence rangefinder, allowing the commander to align targets independently of the turret rotation.

Despite its technological sophistication, the Conqueror faced significant practical hurdles. The vehicle was exceptionally heavy, with frontal armor reaching between 18.8 and 26.7 inches thick. This mass resulted in low top speeds, poor reliability, and limited bridge access. Ultimately, the rise of the Main Battle Tank and the upgrade of the Centurion to a 105 mm gun rendered the dedicated heavy gun tank obsolete.
