In short: For decades, South Korea relied on foreign designs for its undersea defense. Now, the Dosan Ahn Changho class marks a shift toward total maritime independence, featuring domestically designed technology and the rare capability to launch ballistic missiles from the deep.

The KSS-III program represents the final phase of a massive three-stage initiative to build 2/27 attack submarines for the Republic of Korea Navy between 1994 and 2029. Unlike the previous KSS-II class, which was produced in cooperation with German shipbuilders, the Dosan Ahn Changho class is the first to utilize domestic technology. This shift has significantly boosted South Korea's maritime autonomy, with the first batch achieving a 76 percent localization rate for its components.

These 3,000-ton vessels are sophisticated engineering feats. The hulls are constructed from HY-100 alloy steel to withstand extreme deep-water pressure, and the interior contains 85 km of piping and 127 types of electronic and acoustic equipment. To maintain stealth, the design employs non-acoustic technologies like elastic mounts and anechoic coating to minimize noise. The Batch-I series also features an indigenous air-independent propulsion (AIP) module, utilizing the world's second hydrogen fuel cell used in submarines, developed by Bumhan Industries.

The class is a formidable platform for strategic deterrence. The Batch-I design includes six vertical launching system (K-VLS) cells capable of firing Hyunmoo 4-4 ballistic missiles, which have an estimated range of 500 km. Looking ahead, the Batch-II series promises even greater capabilities, including an increase to ten K-VLS cells for missiles like the future Chonryong land-attack cruise missile, and the integration of lithium-ion battery technology from Samsung SDI to enhance underwater endurance and speed.
