How a Canadian modification turned the M16 into a specialized combat tool
In short: The Colt Canada C7 is more than just a simple variant of the American M16. By optimizing the platform for specific ammunition and extreme climates, Canadian engineers created a rugged, specialized rifle that has become a standard for diverse militaries from Norway to the Netherlands.
Developed by Diemaco (now Colt Canada), the C7 was designed to parallel the M16A2 but drew inspiration from the earlier M16A1E1 prototype. Unlike the standard American M16A2, the C7 was built to accommodate a heavier barrel profile. Diemaco employed chrome-lined, hammer-forged barrels featuring a 1 in 178 mm (7 in) rifling twist and a tapering bore to improve precision and durability. The rifle's design also incorporates a spent case deflector and improved handguards. Additionally, the carrying handle and rear sight assembly serve as a primary visual distinction from American M16A2 models.
The rifle was specifically optimized for the 5.56×45mm NATO C77 cartridge and the longer C78 tracer projectiles. This required a redesigned buffer assembly, which rendered the extended feed ramps later used in the Colt M4 unnecessary. The furniture, made from Fiberlite nylon-reinforced polymer, was specifically chosen for its ability to withstand decontamination and extreme cold as low as −68 °C (−90 °F). To assist with short-range engagement, the iron sights include a larger aperture battle sight. This functions as a ghost ring for improved visibility during rapid target acquisition.
Modernization continues through the C7A2, a 'mid-life' upgrade featuring an ambidextrous selector, magazine release, and charging handle. This variant includes a three-rail TRIAD system for mounting accessories like laser designators. Looking forward, the Canadian Forces may transition to a monolithic upper receiver with an integrated quad-rail handguard to increase modularity and precision, potentially moving toward a shorter 18.6-inch (470 mm) barrel and integrated suppressors. The C7A2 variant also features a four-point telescoping stock for better ergonomics. This upgrade was developed specifically to address operational requirements encountered during the conflict in Afghanistan.
