The Dutch shipbuilding giant facing rising tensions in naval defense contracts
In short: From building superyachts to specialized mining vessels, the Damen Group is a global maritime powerhouse. However, the conglomerate is currently navigating significant headwinds, facing high-profile contract cancellations and public complaints regarding timelines and budget constraints in the competitive world of modern naval warfare.
Based in Gorinchem, Netherlands, the Damen Group is a private, family-owned conglomerate that has expanded from a small Dutch shipyard into a global maritime force. Established in 1927 by brothers Jan and Marinus Damen, the company has grown to operate more than 50 shipyards and related companies worldwide, delivering over 150 vessels annually since 1969. The enterprise maintains a significant presence in the maritime sector through its various specialized divisions. It continues to design and engineer a wide array of vessels in-house.
The group's diverse portfolio spans from luxury superyachts via its Amels division to highly specialized industrial vessels, such as the $468 million Benguela Gem diamond mining vessel completed in 2022. Their reach is vast, with business conducted in 120 countries, including significant contributions to coast guard fleets in Canada, Jamaica, and Vietnam. Beyond luxury and mining, the company produces diverse craft including tugs, workboats, and cargo vessels. It also manufactures patrol craft and fast ferries for international clients.
Despite this scale, the group has recently encountered significant friction in the defense sector. The German Navy terminated the Niedersachsen-class frigate programme during June 2026, because the primary contractor failed to adhere to set schedules and financial limits. This followed a 2024 loss of a competition for the Royal Netherlands Navy's Walrus-class submarine replacement. These recent setbacks highlight the intense pressures of international procurement. Such challenges underscore the complexities of large-scale naval engineering projects.
The company also faces scrutiny regarding project management and compliance. In July 2026, Belgium publicly raised concerns about Damen's ability to respect agreed timelines and costs for the Anti-Submarine Warfare Frigate project. Earlier, in March 2016, the World Bank Group debarred Damen Shipyards Gorinchem for 18 months following an investigation into fraudulent practices under the West Africa Regional Fisheries Program. The group's operations extend to providing specialized steering equipment for landing platform docks. This demonstrates their involvement in intricate naval component manufacturing.
