In short: The sheer scale of Asia is staggering: it houses roughly 60% of every person on Earth. Yet, this massive demographic footprint is defined by a deep contrast between ancient nomadic traditions and some of the most densely packed agricultural heartlands in human history.

By approximately 1750, Asia's population was already organized into distinct geographic patterns. Northern Eurasia was sparsely populated by Paleo-Siberian, Tungusic, and Turkic peoples who relied on hunting, foraging, and herding. In contrast, Central Asia served as a mixed zone where nomadic pastoralists like the Buryat Mongols lived alongside agricultural districts settled by Tajiks, Uighurs, and Uzbeks. Population density in these regions was light, with people clustering around specific oases such as Tashkent and Samarkand. The continent's demographic weight shifted dramatically in the lowlands of South and East Asia. These areas were characterized by highly civilized, sedentary populations engaged in agriculture and manufacturing for centuries. The highest densities were found in long-occupied regions like the North China Plain, the Yangtze River valley, and the Ganges and Indus river valleys.

While these heartlands flourished, diverse ethnic groups remained scattered across wet deltaic lowlands and rugged hill country, often maintaining subsistence economies of shifting cultivation. The 20th century brought a radical transformation through nation-state expansion and global trade. Many hundreds of small ethnic groups were absorbed into larger political units, leading to the decline of old languages and distinctive lifestyles. In many new states, power became concentrated in the hands of dominant groups—such as the Han in China or the Javanese in Indonesia—often at the expense of upland tribal peoples like the Hmong or Shan. Today, while growth rates are falling across most of the continent, Asia's population is still projected to exceed five billion by 2050.
