The Fifth Battle of Ypres: How Allied Forces Finally Broke the German Flanders Front
In short: In late 1918, the Allies launched a massive, coordinated offensive to shatter German lines in Flanders. Known as the Fifth Battle of Ypres, this decisive operation utilized a unique pincer strategy, aerial supply drops, and a combined force of Belgian, British, and French troops to reclaim ground lost earlier that year.
By September 1918, the strategic landscape of the Western Front had shifted. Following the failure of the German spring offensive, Allied morale was bolstered by the arrival of American reinforcements, providing a significant numerical advantage. Marshal Ferdinand Foch capitalized on this momentum by initiating the Grand Offensive, a wide-front strategy designed to stretch German defenses to their breaking point. The northern pincer of this effort, the Groupe d'Armées des Flandres, was placed under the command of King Albert I of Belgium, with French General Jean Degoutte serving as Chief of Staff.
The offensive commenced at 5:30 a.m. on 28 September 1918, following a three-hour artillery barrage. The attacking force was substantial, comprising 12 Belgian, 10 British, and 6 French divisions. The assault was immediate and effective; Allied troops penetrated German defenses, advancing up to 6 miles on the first day alone. By 30 September, the Allies had secured the high ground surrounding Ypres, a critical tactical objective. Despite the terrain turning into a quagmire of mud, the advance continued until 2 October, when German reinforcements and logistical constraints finally halted the momentum.
The logistical challenges of the operation were immense, forcing innovative solutions such as the delivery of 15,000 rations via parachute from 80 aircraft. By the time the operation concluded, the Allies had advanced up to 18 miles in some areas, capturing approximately 10,000 prisoners, 300 guns, and 600 machine-guns. While the British suffered 4,695 casualties and the Belgians reported 12,000 casualties, the offensive successfully dismantled the German hold on the region, setting the stage for the subsequent Battle of Courtrai in mid-October.
