The 1918 Second Battle of the Somme was the Allies' decisive path to victory
In short: Often overshadowed by the 1916 conflict, the Second Battle of the Somme in 1918 served as the pivotal counter-offensive that broke German momentum. It transformed a faltering Allied defense into an unrelenting advance, forcing the German army back to the Hindenburg Line and setting the stage for the final Armistice.
The Second Battle of the Somme, fought from late August to early September 1918, was a critical series of Allied counter-offensives. Following the failure of the German Spring Offensive, the Allies seized the initiative. While Supreme Allied Commander Marshal Ferdinand Foch initially pushed for a continuation of the Amiens offensive, British field marshal Douglas Haig redirected efforts toward Albert, recognizing that the previous assault had outrun its supply lines and artillery support.
The campaign intensified on 21 August with the Battle of Albert and the Second Battle of Bapaume. Allied pressure was relentless across a 110-kilometre front. By 29 August, Bapaume had fallen, and the Australian Corps achieved a significant breakthrough at Mont St. Quentin and Péronne. General Henry Rawlinson later characterized these Australian actions as the war's greatest military achievement. The momentum continued on 2 September when the Canadian Corps, alongside British forces, seized the Drocourt-Quéant line, a key segment of the Hindenburg Line, capturing over 6,000 prisoners.
These rapid advances forced German commander Erich Ludendorff to order a general withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line, abandoning territory seized earlier that spring. By 3 September, the German army had been pushed back to the positions they held before their spring offensive. This retreat marked a turning point in the war. In the following weeks, Allied forces, including Canadian, British, Australian, and American troops, successfully breached the Hindenburg Line at the St. Quentin Canal and Cambrai, effectively dismantling the German defensive strategy and accelerating the path to the 11 November Armistice.
