The prince who won a kingdom and lost his life
In short: Jacaerys Velaryon was the political architect of a dynasty's survival. While others fought with raw power, he used diplomacy to secure the North and drafted a desperate gamble to replenish an army of dragons. His success paved the way for his mother's victory, even as he fell in the line of fire.
Born in 114 AC, Jacaerys was the firstborn son of Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon. Despite rumors that his dark hair and eyes suggested a different biological father—Ser Harwin Strong—he was officially named Prince of Dragonstone and heir to the Iron Throne by his mother in 129 AC. During the Dance of the Dragons civil war, Jacaerys proved to be a shrewd political figure by acting as an envoy for the Blacks.
Lord Cregan Stark signed a Pact of Ice and Fire, marking his greatest success in diplomacy. By personally visiting the North and winning over its leadership, Jacaerys secured a vital alliance that would eventually decide the war's outcome. Following the death of his brother Lucerys and the estrangement of his grandfather Corlys Velaryon, Jacaerys took command of the Blacks' forces, assuming a mantle of responsibility far beyond his years.
Faced with a dwindling number of dragonriders, Jacaerys proposed the 'Sowing of the Seeds.' This controversial initiative involved recruiting lowborn individuals—including a shipwright, a blacksmith, and a thief—to bond with unclaimed dragons. While this boosted aerial power, it also led to logistical instability; without his leadership, some of these new riders eventually defected to the Greens. Jacaerys ultimately died in combat at the Battle of the Gullet while providing air support against a Triarchy fleet, sacrificing himself for the cause he helped build.
Though he fell early, Jacaerys' legacy was enduring. The northern alliance he forged remained loyal to his memory; Cregan Stark eventually marched 20,000 troops south to support Rhaenyra’s surviving son, ensuring the eventual surrender of the Greens and the ascension of King Aegon III.
