In short: Named after a forest mammal known for its agility, the Marder has served as the backbone of West German mechanized infantry for over half a century. From the Cold War to modern conflicts in Afghanistan and Ukraine, this rugged vehicle has evolved from a simple design into a battle-hardened tactical asset.

Developed between 1960 and 1971, the Marder was designed to improve upon the Schützenpanzer Lang HS.30, with primary requirements focusing on allowing infantry to fight from within or dismounted, and providing protection against nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons. The vehicle was named 'Marder' in May 1969, after the European pine marten. Production began in 1971, with 2,136 vehicles completed by 1975. While the West German army took 2,100 into service in the early 1970s, the original form was never sold to foreign militaries; however, variants have since been produced for Argentina and considered by Greece.

The vehicle's design is characterized by its simplicity: a front-left driver position, a center two-man turret, and a rear troop compartment for six infantrymen. Over decades, it underwent significant modernization. In 1975, the MILAN anti-tank guided missile was integrated, and later programs added night vision, thermal imagers, and a water-based heating system. A major upgrade in 1988 (the A3 standard) added 1,600 kg of armor specifically to protect against the Russian BMP-2's 30 mm autocannon and cluster bomblets, though this extra weight reduced the top speed from 75 km/h to 65 km/h.

Despite its long service life, the Marder remained untested in combat for 38 years until 2009, when it defended an outpost in Afghanistan. It has since proven highly effective in heavy fighting, though crews face significant physical stress due to a lack of air conditioning. In 2023, Germany donated Marders to Ukraine, where they were deployed by the 82nd Air Assault Brigade during the 2023 counteroffensive. While the Puma is gradually replacing the Marder in Germany, the Marder 1A5 remains the latest iteration, featuring advanced mine protection.
