In short: In the 1960s, the US and West Germany attempted to engineer the ultimate Cold War weapon. The MBT-70 promised futuristic hydropneumatic suspension and guided missiles, but a collision of engineering cultures and incompatible measurement systems turned this high-tech dream into an expensive, abandoned relic.

Conceived by US Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, the MBT-70 was intended to counter the Soviet Union's next generation of armored vehicles. McNamara, a former Ford executive, applied industrial management principles to the project, hoping that a joint US-German venture would reduce costs and create a standardized NATO arsenal. The design was remarkably advanced, featuring a 152mm XM150 gun/launcher capable of firing both conventional rounds and MGM-51 Shillelagh missiles, as well as a hydropneumatic suspension that could raise or lower the 45-tonne chassis by up to 28 inches.

However, the project was plagued by fundamental friction between the two nations. Beyond the differing military requirements, the teams struggled with incompatible engineering practices. The most contentious dispute involved measurement systems: the Americans and Germans could not agree on a common standard, eventually settling on a compromise where all interface connections used metric, but other parts used their respective national units. This complexity, alongside differing approaches to intellectual property and projection methods, led to significant fabrication errors and budget inflation.

Financial and political pressures eventually dismantled the partnership. By 1969, the project's costs had spiraled from an initial $138 million estimate in 1965 to over half a billion dollars. West Germany, facing rising costs and concerns over unproven American engine technology, withdrew from the program. While the US continued development under the XM803 designation until 1971, the project was ultimately cancelled. The failure, however, was not in vain; the technology and funding were redirected to create the M1 Abrams, while West Germany independently developed the Leopard 2.
