The rifle that was too good for its own good
In short: While the M1 Garand became the iconic American workhorse of World War II, the M1941 Johnson rifle was a sophisticated mechanical alternative that nearly changed history. It offered superior magazine capacity and unique loading mechanics, yet it was sidelined by industrial momentum and a few stubborn engineering quirks.
Developed by Melvin Johnson—a lawyer, Marine officer, and hobbyist—the M1941 was born from skepticism. After the U.S. Army adopted the gas-operated M1 Garand in 1936, Johnson doubted that wartime ammunition would be consistent enough for gas systems to function reliably. He spent 1937–1938 perfecting a short-recoil operated rifle. His design featured a multi-lug rotating bolt with eight locking lugs (later expanded to ten in early models) and a unique 10-round rotary magazine. This allowed soldiers to top off ammunition using standard 5-round stripper clips even while a round remained in the chamber—a significant tactical advantage over the Garand.
Despite these innovations, the M1941 faced uphill battles. Its reciprocating barrel caused excessive vertical shot dispersion and created mechanical stress that made it unreliable when a bayonet was attached. Furthermore, the Army had already invested heavily in the M1 Garand's production lines. Because of this lack of institutional support, the Johnson was largely rejected for mass issue. It saw limited service with the U.S. Marines in the Pacific and was exported in small numbers to countries like Chile, Norway, and the Netherlands.
The rifle's legacy is one of "what if." While it never achieved the fame of the Garand, its DNA persisted; Johnson later advocated for the AR-15, which utilized a bolt design similar to his rifle. Today, its history is preserved in rare survivors, such as the rifle carried by Medal of Honor recipient Robert Hugo Dunlap into the battle for Iwo Jima, where he credited the weapon with saving lives.
