In short: In the Marvel Universe, the name Nighthawk does not belong to just one man. While the original Kyle Richmond began as a villainous shadow of Batman, the mantle has been claimed by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, alternate-universe heroes, and even a political leader who rose from the ranks of the superpowered to the presidency.

The most prominent Nighthawk is Kyle Richmond, who first appeared in October 1969 as a member of the Squadron Sinister. Created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Sal Buscema, this version was loosely based on DC Comics' Batman. Richmond's journey is one of extreme volatility; after a tragic drunk-driving accident that killed a woman named Mindy Williams, he transitioned from a supervillain to a hero, eventually joining the Defenders in 1974.

Richmond's history is marked by dramatic shifts in both morality and biology. He has faced paralysis, been presumed dead after a sacrifice in 1982, and was later revealed to be in a brain-dead coma before being revived through supernatural means. This revival granted him a 'second sight' to perceive crimes before they occur. His powers, derived from an alchemical serum, grant him enhanced strength, agility, and durability specifically from dusk until dawn.

The character's complexity is further expanded through alternate realities. On Earth-712, Richmond and his brother Neal belong to the Squadron Supreme, a group that once transformed the United States into a utopia—a move Richmond opposed by forming the Redeemers. In another continuity, an African-American version of Richmond serves as a mentor to Tilda Johnson. Concurrently, S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives Joaquin Pennyworth and Jackson Norriss have adopted the title, demonstrating that within the Marvel Multiverse, Nighthawk represents a repeating mantle of strife rather than one individual.
