In short: In an alternate future, the world has fallen to supervillains. For Logan, the end began not with a war, but with a trick. A single illusion by Mysterio led him to slaughter his own teammates, shattering his psyche and forcing him to abandon the Wolverine identity forever.

The character of Old Man Logan, created by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, debuted in a storyline running from June 2008 to June 2009. This aged version of Wolverine exists in a universe where superheroes were wiped out and replaced by a regime of villains. The landscape is divided among powerful figures like Doctor Doom, Red Skull, and Magneto, with Red Skull serving as the president of the United States.

The psychological trauma that defines this character stems from a massacre at the X-Mansion. During an assault by 40 supervillains, Logan slaughtered the attackers to protect the mutant children. However, he later discovered the entire event was an illusion orchestrated by Mysterio. The enemies he killed were actually his fellow X-Men, a realization that destroyed him mentally and caused him to flee in shame.

This trauma led Logan to abandon his iconic claws and persona. In his desolate reality, he lives in Sacramento, California—part of the territory known as Hulkland—under the thumb of the Hulk Gang. His journey involves a perilous mission for a blind Clint Barton and a final, violent confrontation with an aged, sanity-deteriorating Bruce Banner, who reveals he provoked the murder of Logan's family simply because he was bored.

The character's influence extends beyond the comics, serving as an inspiration for the 2017 film Logan and appearing in the 2024 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Deadpool & Wolverine.
