How an indie comic publisher redefined the mainstream through diverse storytelling
In short: Born from a desire to publish stories worth reading, Oni Press bypassed the superhero boom to embrace drama, romance, and thrillers. From its 1997 origins in Portland to a major merger in 2019, the publisher has navigated industry shifts, creative expansions, and significant corporate upheaval.
Founded in 1997 by Bob Schreck and Joe Nozemack, Oni Press was built on the principle that sequential art could encompass any genre. While the industry was dominated by superhero titles, the Portland-based publisher sought to occupy a 'real mainstream' space, focusing on genres like realistic drama, romance, and thrill 1. This mission led to award-winning successes, including Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim and Greg Rucka's Queen & Country, the latter of which ran monthly from 2001 to 2007.
The company's trajectory has been marked by significant structural changes. The Oni–Lion Forge Publishing Group (OLFPG) was created when Polarity's subsidiary, Oni Press, joined Lion Forge Comics in 2019. While the Oni brand remained the primary name, the merger brought both expansion and instability. The period following the merger saw substantial leadership turnover and staff reductions, including the departure of long-time publisher James Lucas Jones and vice president Charlie Chu in mid-2022.
Beyond comics, the publisher has experimented with diverse imprints and media, such as the 2016 launch of Limerence Press for erotic and sex-education stories. However, this expansion has not been without friction. The company faced legal challenges in 2022 regarding the graphic novel Gender Queer, as well as public allegations from creators regarding unpaid royalties. Despite these challenges, the publisher continues to manage a diverse portfolio of graphic novels and periodical comics under new leadership, including publisher Hunter Gorinson.
