In short: Before he was a cinematic icon, Rocket Raccoon was a minor comic book character with a surprising origin. Inspired by a 1968 Beatles track, this intelligent raccoon evolved from a British-accented side character into a master tactician and a cornerstone of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Created by writer Bill Mantlo and artist Keith Giffen, Rocket Raccoon first appeared in Marvel Preview #7 in July 1976. In his debut, the character was known simply as "Rocky" and spoke using stock British English phrases like "old bean" and "jolly good." It wasn't until his appearance in The Incredible Hulk #271 in May 1982 that it was revealed "Rocky" was short for "Rocket." During this initial period, he was featured in a backup story titled "Prince Wayfinder: The Sword in the Star." This early iteration of the character was quite different from his later iterations.

The character's identity is deeply rooted in pop culture, drawing direct inspiration from the Beatles' 1968 song "Rocky Raccoon." While his early appearances were sparse—appearing in only ten comic books during his first thirty years—his role expanded significantly during the 2008 relaunch of the Guardians of the Galaxy. In this era, he became a prominent member of the team, often serving as a gifted military tactician and expert marksman.

Rocket's backstory is complex, involving the planet Halfworld, an abandoned colony for the mentally ill. In one narrative arc, it was revealed that the anthropomorphic animals of Halfworld were actually designed to serve as caretakers to calm the asylum's inmates. This dark origin contrasts with his modern persona: a fearless, loyal, and insightful leader who has navigated cosmic crises ranging from the War of Kings to the threat of the goddess Nyx. His adventures have taken him across the Keystone Quadrant, a region of space isolated by the Galacian Wall. He even commands his own starship, known as the Rack 'n' Ruin.
