In short: Originally intended as a non-powered acrobat, Marvel's Puck underwent a radical retcon. What began as a character defined by martial skill and gymnastics became a victim of mystical accidents, shifting from a mere short fighter to an immortal, molecularly compressed warrior with near-invulnerable skin.

Created by John Byrne in 1983, the original Puck, Eugene Milton Judd, was initially conceived as a dwarf with no superhuman abilities, relying solely on exceptional training and acrobatic skills. However, writer Bill Mantlo later introduced a mystical origin for his stature. This retcon was based on a single reference to the character being in constant pain—a detail Byrne later noted was actually an effect of achondroplasty, the medical condition causing his dwarfism.

Judd's transformation was the result of a botched heist involving the Black Blade of Baghdad. While attempting to steal the artifact, he accidentally freed the sorcerer Black Raazer. To contain the threat, Judd used ancient mysticism and his own life force, which resulted in him being transformed into an immortal, dwarfish form. This change also granted him a slowed aging process, leaving him appearing to be in his thirties.

The character's physical nature was further altered through genetic manipulation by the Master of the World. This process condensed his body tissues at a molecular level, giving him a texture akin to compressed rubber. This allows him to utilize a trademark cartwheeling attack, slamming into enemies with high-speed momentum. His history is marked by frequent transformations, including a period where he regained his original height and age after being knocked into a dark fountain by Loki, and a later return to his dwarf form after being injected with a specialized serum.
