Solingen: How a German City Built Its Reputation on the Edge of a Blade
In short: Known as the City of Blades, Solingen has been a center for fine metalwork for over two millennia. From ancient blacksmiths to modern industrial giants, the city’s identity is forged in steel. Yet, its history is marked by cycles of destruction, reconstruction, and the relentless pursuit of craftsmanship.
The reputation of Solingen as a premier blacksmithing hub dates back over 2,000 years, with archaeological evidence of smelters found throughout the region. By the Middle Ages, the quality of its weaponry was so highly regarded that Solingen-made swords were traded extensively across Europe, reaching as far as the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms in the British Isles. This heritage is so central to the city's identity that medieval swordsmiths were responsible for designing the town's official coat of arms.
Solingen's history has been defined by both its industrial prowess and its vulnerability to conflict. In the 15th century, the settlement transitioned from a small village into a fortified town. However, it suffered immensely during the 17th century, losing about 1,800 residents to the plague between 1614 and 1619. Shortly thereafter, the city became a focal point of the Thirty Years' War, enduring repeated attacks and plunder that resulted in the destruction of Burg Castle. This pattern of resilience continued into the 20th century; the Old Town was completely razed by an RAF bombing raid in 1944, which killed 1,800 people and injured over 1,500 more.
The modern city is a product of significant territorial expansion. In 1929, the incorporation of neighboring towns like Ohligs, Wald, Höhscheid, and Gräfrath propelled Solingen’s population past 100,000, earning it the status of a Großstadt, or large city. Today, the city continues to evolve through urban development initiatives like Regionale 2006 and City 2013, which have repurposed industrial spaces into modern infrastructure. Despite its transformation, Solingen remains the knife-making center of Germany, home to renowned firms such as Zwilling J. A. Henckels, Wüsthof, and Böker, maintaining a tradition that has survived centuries of upheaval.
