In short: Created by James O'Barr as a way to process the death of his fiancée, The Crow follows Eric, an undead vigilante. After being killed by a gang of thugs, Eric is resurrected by a supernatural crow to hunt down those responsible for his and Shelly's deaths.

The series began as an underground success, first appearing on the back cover of Deadworld #10 in November 1988. Its first official appearance was in Caliber Presents #1 in January 1989. The original limited series, published by Caliber Comics, ran from February to May 1989 and consisted of four issues titled "Pain", "Fear", "Irony", and "Despair".

In the comics, the protagonist Eric is a walking corpse who is totally invulnerable and does not heal. He is guided by a supernatural crow, which is not a real bird but a spirit visible only to him and occasionally others. This crow acts as both a companion and a goad, chastising Eric for dwelling on Shelly's death, which the bird views as useless self-indulgence.

The narrative centers on Eric's quest for vengeance against the gang members who killed him and his fiancée, Shelly. The gang included members such as T-Bird, the group's leader, and his right-hand man, Funboy. Other targets included Tin-Tin, Tom-Tom, and Top Dollar. Unlike the 1994 film adaptation, where Top Dollar is the main antagonist, the comic focuses on the gang's collective brutality.

The franchise has seen significant expansion through various media. A successful film adaptation was released by Miramax Films in 1994, followed by three standalone sequels: City of Angels (1996), Salvation (2000), and Wicked Prayer (2005). A second film adaptation was released on August 23, 2024, starring Bill Skarsgård.
