A prequel exploring the justice of a soul before the main story
In short: Before Frisk ever fell, a child named Clover entered the Underground. This fan-made prequel to Undertale explores a different path, following a human with a yellow soul. Through choices of violence or pacifism, players navigate a subterranean world to investigate the disappearance of five previous humans.
Released on December 9, 2023, Undertale Yellow is a role-playing game developed by Team Undertale Yellow. It serves as a prequel to the original Undertale, following Clover, a human child whose soul embodies the trait of justice. The narrative begins after monsters were sealed beneath Mount Ebott following a war against humans, and focuses on Clover's journey through various regions like the Dark Ruins, Snowdin Forest, and the Wild East.
The game's mechanics mirror its predecessor, featuring bullet hell combat where players control a yellow heart to evade attacks. However, it introduces unique elements, such as Clover using a gun to deal damage through timed shots. Boss encounters can also alter gameplay, such as the battle with Starlo in the Wild East, which ties the player's soul and limits movement.
The story's outcome shifts based on the player's moral choices. In a "Pacifist" ending, Clover may sacrifice their soul to aid monster freedom. In a "Genocide" ending, Clover kills several characters, including Starlo and Asgore, eventually freeing the human souls and escaping the barrier. A "Neutral" ending involves manipulation by the sentient flower Flowey, who attempts to steal human souls during the chaos.
The development of the game began in 2016 after receiving permission from Undertale creator Toby Fox. While originally aiming for a winter 2022 release, the project was completed by a team of over twenty people and released for free on Game Jolt. The game's massive popularity was evidenced by approximately 350,000 downloads within its first month of release.
