The warehouse that thinks: how storage became a data science
In short: Most warehouses are just buildings for boxes. AutoStore turned them into living, breathing machines. By replacing aisles with a dense grid of cubes, they increased storage density by up to 400%. But the real revolution isn't the robots; it is the shift toward intelligent fulfillment.
Founded in 1995 by Jakob Hatteland, AutoStore emerged from a practical crisis: a warehouse reaching full capacity in just one month. A small robotic storage system was created by technical director Ingvar Hognaland to address this issue. This 'goods-to-person' system fundamentally changed logistics by removing the need for human-traversed aisles. Instead of people walking to products, robots move the products to the people, allowing for a modular, scalable, and energy-efficient operation where ten robots consume as much power as a single vacuum cleaner.
The company's trajectory is marked by massive capital shifts. It became Norway's first unicorn in 2019 after being sold for NOK 15 billion. By 2021, SoftBank acquired a 40% stake for NOK 23 billion, and the company launched its largest IPO in Norway in two decades. This investment fueled a move beyond simple hardware. In 2022, they launched 'Pio,' a 'robot as a service' model designed for smaller businesses that couldn't afford the high upfront costs of traditional cube-storage technology.
As of 2026, AutoStore is pivoting toward 'intelligent fulfillment.' This strategy, powered by the CubeVerse cloud platform, moves the focus from mere execution to real-time optimization. By integrating data from simulation, deployment, and live operations, the system uses machine learning to predict disruptions and recommend optimizations. Rather than replacing existing warehouse management systems, it sits on top of them, creating a self-optimizing environment that improves throughput and predictability without requiring new physical infrastructure.
