From graphic stage violence to Broadway acclaim, the versatile career of Tracy Letts.
In short: Born in Oklahoma to academic parents, Tracy Letts evolved from a struggling actor in Chicago to a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and celebrated screen performer. His career spans the gritty, violent origins of his early plays to high-profile roles in television dramas and major motion pictures, defying simple categorization.
Tracy Letts was born on July 4, 1965, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Raised in Durant, he was influenced by his father, Dennis, an aspiring actor and English professor, and his mother, Billie, a best-selling novelist. After a brief stint at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Letts moved to Dallas and eventually to Chicago at age 20. There, he became a fixture of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, officially joining the ensemble in 2002.
His writing career began with the 1991 play Killer Joe, a dark, violent work that initially struggled to find a producer due to its graphic nature. Letts and his peers eventually produced it themselves, leading to international success. He followed this with Bug in 1996 and The Man from Nebraska in 2003, the latter of which was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. His most significant breakthrough, August: Osage County, premiered in 2007. This black comedy about a dysfunctional Oklahoma family earned him both a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award for best play.
Letts’s acting career has been equally prolific. He made his Broadway debut in 2012 in Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, winning a Tony Award for his portrayal of George. His screen presence is well-known, including roles in the television series Homeland and films such as The Big Short, The Post, and Lady Bird. Whether writing screenplays for his own adaptations or performing in the works of others, Letts maintains a reputation for portraying complex, grounded characters who grapple with the realities of the human condition.
