A by-election cancelled just four days before the vote
In short: In September 2026, Abbotsford-Mission prepared for a critical provincial by-election. However, the scheduled vote vanished when Premier David Eby called a snap general election, leaving candidates and voters in a sudden political limbo just days before they were meant to head to the polls.
The 2026 Abbotsford-Mission by-election was intended to fill a vacancy left by Conservative MLA Reann Gasper. Gasper, who defeated incumbent minister Pam Alexis in the 2024 provincial election, resigned on August 22, 2026, to facilitate the entry of Kerry-Lynne Findlay into the Legislative Assembly. Findlay, a former federal MP and cabinet minister, had been elected leader of the BC Conservatives on May 30, 2026, succeeding John Rustad.
The political landscape was fraught with tension. While the writ was issued on August 29, 2026, and the vote was set for September 26, the Conservative Party faced an internal crisis marked by multiple defections. This instability led Findlay to resign her leadership on September 20, 2026, despite remaining a candidate for the seat. The campaign, which included a debate on September 10 regarding taxes, agriculture, and transportation, was abruptly cut short when the by-election was cancelled on September 22.
The cancellation occurred because Premier David Eby called a general election for October 24, 2026. Under the Constitution Act, a by-election writ must be issued within six months of a vacancy, with the vote scheduled exactly 28 days later. Because the general election was called, the by-election was voided, and any ballots cast would not be included in the general election results. Consequently, the Conservatives selected businessman Darryl Kropp to represent the district in the subsequent general election instead of Gasper.
The Abbotsford-Mission district, a semi-urban area in the Fraser Valley straddling the Fraser River, has seen diverse representation since its 2008 creation, including the BC Liberal, New Democratic, and BC Conservative parties.
