Laufey’s shift from jazz preservation to a messy, vulnerable diary
In short: After establishing herself through romantic jazz ballads, Icelandic singer-songwriter Laufey has pivoted. Her third studio album, A Matter of Time, moves away from preserving musical legacies toward a more extroverted, complex, and emotionally raw exploration of the human experience.
Released on 22 August 2025, A Matter of Time marks a significant evolution for Laufey. While her previous works, such as 2023's Bewitched, focused on original lovesick ballads inspired by the Great American Songbook, this third project is described by the artist as her most ambitious and personal yet. Working alongside veteran producer Spencer Stewart and The National's Aaron Dessner, Laufey aimed for a denser, louder instrumental texture to mirror her live shows.
Thematically, the album moves beyond her signature romantic aesthetic to tackle more difficult subjects. It explores the intricacies of friendship break-ups, the apprehension surrounding love, and personal introspection. Critics have noted the album's concept of a young woman unraveling, with tracks like "Snow White" addressing impossible beauty standards and "Tough Luck" examining the aftermath of failed relationships.
The album's commercial and critical impact was immediate. It debuted at number three on the UK Albums Chart and number four on the US Billboard 200, selling 99,000 album-equivalent units in its US debut. Alongside critical acclaim, the record secured Laufey the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album award at the 68th Annual Grammys and achieved an 84/100 Metacritic weighted average.
Following the standard release, a deluxe edition titled A Matter of Time: The Final Hour was issued on 10 April 2026. This reissue included new material such as the single "How I Get," which Laufey performed alongside the BBC Concert Orchestra.
