How a former bricklayer became the most feared two-division champion in combat sports history
In short: Alex Pereira rose from the favelas of Brazil to dominate both kickboxing and mixed martial arts. After overcoming a severe alcohol addiction that derailed his early youth, he transformed into a legendary striker, becoming the only fighter to hold simultaneous world titles in two different weight classes in two sports.
Born in 1987 in the Batistini favela, Alex Pereira’s early life was defined by manual labor and personal tragedy. He dropped out of middle school to work as a bricklayer’s assistant and shoeshine boy. By age 12, he had developed a severe alcohol addiction, which eventually impaired his performance at a tire shop. In 2009, at 21, he began training in kickboxing as a strategy to quit drinking, successfully achieving sobriety by the end of 2012.
Pereira’s combat career is defined by his signature left hook and an extraordinary ability to cut weight. In kickboxing, he became the first fighter to hold Glory titles in two weight classes simultaneously. His transition to mixed martial arts was equally historic. He is the ninth fighter in UFC history to win championships in two different weight divisions and the first to achieve this in both middleweight and light heavyweight. His rapid ascent included setting a record for the shortest time to complete three UFC title defenses at 175 days, surpassing the previous 189-day record held by Ronda Rousey.
His rivalry with Israel Adesanya, whom he defeated twice in kickboxing and once in the UFC, solidified his status as a premier combat athlete. Despite his success, Pereira’s career has seen tactical shifts and close contests, such as his split-decision victory over Jan Błachowicz and his 2025 title reclamation against Magomed Ankalaev. Known for his massive frame—often weighing 215 pounds during middleweight fights—Pereira continues to challenge the limits of weight-class dominance, recently expressing interest in facing former heavyweight champion Jon Jones.
