How a goalkeeper climbed through all six levels of English football
In short: From the depths of the Conference Premier to the heights of the Premier League, Alex McCarthy’s career is a masterclass in persistence. By the age of 22, he had achieved a rare feat: competing in every single one of the top six tiers of the English football pyramid.
Alex McCarthy’s ascent began in the lower reaches of the English game. A product of Reading’s Academy, his early years were defined by a series of formative loans. In August 2007, he made a single appearance for Woking in the Conference Premier, and by March 2008, he was gaining work experience at Cambridge United. These early stints in the non-league circuit provided the foundation for a professional career that would eventually span the entire professional hierarchy.
The middle stages of his career saw him navigating the Championship and Premier League. After establishing himself at Reading, McCarthy moved to Queens Park Rangers in 2014 and Crystal Palace in 2015, where he joined on a reported £3.5 million deal. His time at Southampton, which began in August 2016, saw him transition from a backup role to a vital first-choice goalkeeper. During the 2017–18 campaign, his performances were so impactful that he was named both the Southampton Players' Player of the Season and the Fans' Player of the Season.
International recognition followed his domestic climb. While he represented England at the under-21 level starting in 2010, his senior debut arrived much later, in November 2018, during a friendly against the United States at Wembley. This long-awaited milestone came more than five years after his initial senior call-up in 2013. Today, after a successful stint helping Southampton secure promotion in 2024, McCarthy continues his journey with Leicester City, a club he joined in July 2026.
