In short: Founded to secure statehood for Telangana, Bharat Rashtra Samithi dominated regional politics for a decade. Yet, a bold 2022 pivot toward national ambitions preceded a sharp electoral decline. Once an unstoppable force in the state assembly, the party now faces a precarious future after losing its parliamentary footing entirely.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi, originally established as Telangana Rashtra Samithi by K. Chandrashekar Rao on 27 April 2001, was built on a single-point agenda: the creation of a separate state of Telangana. Operating from Jala Drushyam in Hyderabad, the party quickly demonstrated local influence, securing significant portions of territorial constituencies in Siddipet within two months of its inception. For over a decade, the party led a sustained agitation that culminated in the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and the formal creation of Telangana in 2014.

The party’s electoral success peaked following statehood. In the 2014 assembly elections, it secured 63 seats, and in 2018, it achieved a landslide victory with 88 seats. However, the party’s attempt to transition into a national player—marked by its October 2022 rebranding to Bharat Rashtra Samithi—coincided with a period of rapid decline. By the 2023 Telangana Legislative Assembly election, the party’s seat count plummeted to 39, and its vote share dropped by over 10 percent. This downward trend intensified during the 2024 Indian general election, where the party failed to secure a single seat in its home state.

The party’s history is defined by its strategic pivots and alliances. It has navigated various political landscapes, including joining the United Progressive Alliance in 2004 and later withdrawing support over the delay in statehood. Despite its current setbacks, including the loss of state party status in Andhra Pradesh in 2023, the organization maintains a presence in the Rajya Sabha with four seats as of 2025. The shift from a focused regional movement to a national entity remains a defining, albeit challenging, chapter in its two-decade history.
