Bigg Boss 17 transformed the reality show into a strategic neighbourhood of three houses
In short: The seventeenth season of the Indian reality juggernaut Bigg Boss introduced a radical structural shift. By dividing contestants into three distinct groups—Dil, Dimaag, and Dum—the show moved beyond simple social dynamics, forcing participants to navigate a house designed as a neighbourhood where architecture itself dictated their strategic alliances and daily survival.
Premiering on 15 October 2023, Bigg Boss 17, subtitled Dil, Dimaag aur Dum Ka Game, fundamentally altered the show's spatial and psychological environment. The house was reimagined as a 'Muhallah' or neighbourhood, featuring three separate bedrooms known as Makaans. Each room was themed to reflect a specific approach: Dil (Heart) focused on connection, Dimaag (Mind) emphasized wit and duty, and Dum (Strength) challenged tolerance through a gothic, black-hued aesthetic. This layout eliminated a communal dining space, forcing contestants to eat within their respective bedrooms, which further solidified the divisions between the groups.
The season introduced unique functional spaces that shifted the power balance. The Dimaag bedroom housed an Archive Room, allowing select housemates to review past footage, while the Dil bedroom featured a Therapy Room. The Dum bedroom contained an 'Answering Machine' telephone, adding a layer of mystery to the environment. To capture every nuance of these interactions, the production installed 110 cameras, the highest number in the show's history. The visual identity of the season was equally distinct, marked by an orange-themed eye logo featuring fire-releasing windows and a blazing pupil, a departure from previous iterations.
The game concluded on 28 January 2024 with a record-breaking grand finale that lasted 6 hours, 35 minutes, and 36 seconds. Munawar Faruqui emerged as the winner, with Abhishek Kumar as the runner-up. Throughout the season, Salman Khan hosted the majority of the episodes, though Karan Johar stepped in for Weeks 7 and 13. The show also experimented with new segments, such as 'Just Chill with Arbaaz & Sohail', which eventually merged into the weekend broadcasts. This season remains a notable case study in how reality television can use architectural design and thematic grouping to force conflict and cooperation among its participants.
