From guitar technician to frontman: the quiet evolution of Billy Howerdel
In short: Before founding A Perfect Circle, Billy Howerdel spent years behind the scenes as a guitar technician for legendary acts like David Bowie and Nine Inch Nails. His transition from audio-technical support to songwriter and lead vocalist reveals a deliberate, decades-long shift in creative identity that continues to redefine his musical output.
Born in New Jersey in 1970, Howerdel’s path to music began in a high school television production class, where an extracurricular audio program sparked his interest in sound engineering. This technical foundation propelled him into high-profile roles, working as a guitar technician for bands such as Faith No More, the Smashing Pumpkins, and Guns N' Roses. It was during his time working for Tool on the Ænima tour in 1992 that he met Maynard James Keenan. Howerdel shared his early demos with Keenan, who eventually agreed to provide vocals for Howerdel’s new project, A Perfect Circle, which launched in 1999.
The success of A Perfect Circle was immediate, with their 2000 debut, Mer de Noms, achieving platinum status in the United States within its first year. However, the collaborative dynamic shifted as Keenan’s involvement in the creative process grew, leading to artistic friction. By 2003, while working on the band's second album, Thirteenth Step, Howerdel began developing solo material. This period marked the beginning of his transition toward becoming a primary vocalist, a move encouraged by Keenan himself during the recording of the 2004 covers album, Emotive.
Howerdel’s solo project, Ashes Divide, debuted in 2008 with the album Keep Telling Myself It's Alright. Despite early momentum, the project faced years of delays and shifting priorities, with many songs eventually being repurposed for A Perfect Circle’s 2018 album, Eat the Elephant. By 2022, Howerdel finally moved away from the Ashes Divide moniker, releasing his second studio album, What Normal Was, under his own name. This evolution reflects a broader career trajectory where Howerdel has balanced his roles as a producer, instrumentalist, and songwriter, often blurring the lines between his solo work and his collaborative efforts.
Beyond his primary bands, Howerdel has maintained a diverse portfolio, including composing the soundtrack for the 2005 video game Jak X: Combat Racing and contributing to Guns N' Roses' Chinese Democracy. Throughout his career, he has remained focused on his craft, maintaining a disciplined lifestyle that includes the practice of Transcendental Meditation.
