How a television romantic subplot turned a stalled music career into a number one hit
In short: Billy Vera spent decades as a working musician, songwriter, and producer before a fictional romance on the sitcom Family Ties transformed his song At This Moment into a chart-topping sensation. This unlikely revival highlights the unpredictable intersection of television storytelling and music industry success in the late twentieth century.
Born William Patrick McCord in 1944, Billy Vera navigated a multifaceted career that spanned songwriting for legends like Fats Domino and The Shirelles to pioneering interracial duets in the 1960s. Despite his early industry contributions, including co-writing the 1967 hit Storybook Children with Judy Clay, Vera faced significant commercial lulls throughout the 1970s. By the early 1980s, after his record label Alfa Records shuttered its American operations, his solo prospects appeared to have evaporated entirely.
The turning point arrived in 1985 when a producer for the sitcom Family Ties heard Vera’s band, The Beaters, perform At This Moment. The song was subsequently used to underscore romantic scenes between characters Alex P. Keaton and Ellen. The public response was immediate and overwhelming, leading Rhino Records to reissue the track in 1986. By January 1987, the song reached number one on the US charts, where it remained for 21 weeks, effectively revitalizing Vera’s career and opening doors to television acting, theme song composition, and voice-over work.
Beyond his chart success, Vera has maintained a prolific career as a music historian, producing and writing liner notes for over 200 reissue albums. His 2013 Grammy Award for Best Album Notes on the Ray Charles box set Singular Genius underscores his deep commitment to preserving musical legacies. Today, Vera continues to perform in Southern California, while his diverse portfolio includes published memoirs, novels, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, cementing his status as a versatile fixture of American entertainment.
