In short: From a 1933 squad with a losing record to a modern-day playoff contender, Boise State's ascent is unparalleled. With a 28-season winning streak and a .727 all-time winning percentage, the Broncos have rewritten the playbook for mid-major success.

The program's evolution is a study in upward mobility. Originally established in 1933 as a junior college, the Broncos first fielded a team under coach Dusty Kline that managed only a 1–2–1 record. Over the decades, the program climbed through the NAIA, NCAA Division II, and Division I-AA, eventually reaching the FBS level in 1996. This progression was punctuated by significant milestones, including national championships at both the junior college level in 1958 and the Division I-AA level in 1980.

The era of Lyle Smith in the late 1940s and 50s laid the foundation for this culture of excellence. Smith, who never had a losing season as head coach, famously won his first 31 games and led the team to 13 conference titles. This momentum continued through the legendary tenure of Chris Petersen, whose 1986 introduction of the iconic blue turf coincided with a period of unprecedented dominance. Under Petersen, the Broncos achieved a 14–0 season in 2009 and reached as high as number 2 in the national polls.

Despite the glory, the journey has faced significant hurdles. The program navigated the loss of players during World War II and faced NCAA probation in 2011 due to minor violations. Yet, the Broncos have remained a constant force, maintaining the longest current winning season streak in the FBS. Most recently, the 2020s have seen a resurgence, with the 2024 squad securing a number 3 seed in the College Football Playoff, proving that the program's blueprint for success remains intact.
