How a 264-pound running back redefined power in the National Football League
In short: Brandon Jacobs was an anomaly in professional football, standing 6 feet 4 inches and weighing 264 pounds. Known as the Juggernaut, he leveraged his massive frame to break tackles and anchor the New York Giants' ground game, eventually securing two Super Bowl rings during his nine-season career in the NFL.
Born in Napoleonville, Louisiana, in 1982, Brandon Jacobs navigated a winding path to professional success. After standout performances at Assumption High School and Coffeyville Community College, he played at Auburn University before transferring to Southern Illinois. His collegiate versatility—marked by high-scoring seasons and All-American honors—caught the attention of the New York Giants, who selected him in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL draft.
Jacobs entered the NFL as a backup to Tiki Barber, initially seeing limited action. However, his physical profile set him apart. By studying the film of power runner Eddie George, Jacobs refined his style to maximize his size advantage. Following Barber's retirement in 2007, Jacobs became the Giants' primary starter. He was a key component of the 'Earth, Wind, & Fire' running back corps, alongside Derrick Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw, and played a crucial role in the team's victories in Super Bowl XLII and Super Bowl XLVI.
Beyond the field, Jacobs' career was marked by both intensity and controversy. He faced recurring knee injuries that hampered his later seasons and had a brief, difficult stint with the San Francisco 49ers in 2012, which ended in his suspension and release after he publicly expressed frustration over his playing time. He returned to the Giants for a final season in 2013 before announcing his retirement in early 2014. His post-football life has included appearances on television programs like Shark Tank and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and he has even expressed interest in returning to the NFL as a defensive end.
