Brent Burns is a rare NHL hybrid who thrives on both ends of ice
In short: Drafted as a right winger, Brent Burns evolved into a Norris Trophy-winning defenceman while maintaining the offensive instincts of a forward. Beyond his unique versatility, he is a dedicated animal enthusiast who manages a private ranch and holds a place in history for his remarkable iron man streak.
Brent Burns entered the NHL in 2003 after being selected 20th overall by the Minnesota Wild. Initially a forward in his youth, he was converted to defence by coach Jacques Lemaire upon turning professional. This transition defined his career, though he has frequently shifted between positions, notably playing as a forward for the San Jose Sharks during the 2012–13 and 2013–14 seasons. His offensive prowess as a defenceman eventually earned him the James Norris Memorial Trophy in 2017, cementing his status as one of the league's most dynamic players.
His career has been marked by significant durability and longevity. During the 2025–26 season, Burns became only the second player in NHL history to reach 1,000 consecutive regular-season games. By October 2025, he had played his 1,500th career game, joining an elite group of only 23 players to reach that milestone. His scoring ability remains elite; in January 2026, he tied Bobby Orr for eighth place all-time in goals scored by a defenceman, with 270 career goals.
Off the ice, Burns is known for his unconventional interests, particularly his passion for exotic animals. His former Saint Paul home was affectionately dubbed the "Burns Zoo" due to his extensive collection of reptiles and other pets. He currently operates a ranch in Texas where he keeps species such as wildebeest and fallow deer. This commitment to animals is matched by his community involvement, including his long-standing practice of hosting military families in a private suite at games and winning the NHL Foundation Player Award for his charitable efforts.
Despite his success, Burns's journey has faced challenges, including multiple concussions and a misdiagnosis during the 2008–09 season that sparked scrutiny regarding team medical staff. He has also ventured into acting, appearing as a raider named Skane in the television series Vikings. As he enters his 23rd NHL season with the Colorado Avalanche, Burns remains a singular figure in professional hockey, defined by his adaptability, endurance, and eclectic life outside the rink.
