In short: In the late 1800s, Chula Vista became the world's largest center for lemon production. But a single corporate relocation in 1941 permanently erased the city's agricultural identity, transforming it from a sprawling orchard into an industrial powerhouse that fueled World War II.

The transformation of Chula Vista was driven by infrastructure and innovation. Following the completion of a dam in 1888, irrigation allowed for large-scale farming. By the early 20th century, the city was a global leader in citrus; however, it also hosted diverse industries, including the first watch factory west of the Mississippi River in 1889 and specialized yacht clubs that built unique racing sloops.

The most radical shift occurred during World War II. In November 1940, the city purchased its airport for Rohr Aircraft. By early 1941—just months before Pearl Harbor—the relocation of this corporation fundamentally altered the landscape. The land was never returned to orchards; instead, it became a hub where 11,000 employees manufactured power units for the Consolidated B-24 Liberator bomber.

This industrial boom triggered a demographic explosion. The population tripled between 1940 and 1950 as factory workers and servicemen settled in the area. While the citrus groves disappeared to make room for manufacturing, the city's growth was marked by complex social dynamics, including labor strikes by Filipino and Mexican workers in the 1930s and significant legal battles over Japanese American property rights during the war.

Today, Chula Vista stands as a testament to rapid urban evolution. It evolved from a Spanish land grant (Rancho de la Nación) into a major metropolitan hub, balancing its history of agricultural dominance with its legacy as an industrial center in the South Bay.
