In short: In 1979, a dam breach at a New Mexico uranium mill sent millions of gallons of acidic, radioactive waste into the Puerco River. While often overshadowed by other nuclear accidents, this spill remains the largest release of radioactive material in American history, leaving a lasting environmental scar on the Navajo Nation.

On July 16, 1979, a tailings pond at the United Nuclear Corporation mill near Church Rock, New Mexico, suffered a 20-foot breach. This failure released approximately 93 million gallons of acidic, radioactive tailings solution and over 1,100 tons of solid waste into the Pipeline Arroyo. The spill contaminated the Puerco River, which served as a vital water source for local Navajo communities, who relied on the river for drinking, irrigation, and livestock.

The disaster's impact was exacerbated by a lack of immediate communication. Warnings were issued in English days after the event, failing to reach many residents who primarily spoke Diné Bizaad. Despite the severity of the contamination, which traveled 80 miles downstream into Arizona, the governor of New Mexico refused to declare the area a federal disaster, significantly limiting the aid available to affected families. The event received minimal national media attention, leaving the community to navigate the long-term consequences of the toxic exposure largely on their own.

Decades later, the region continues to grapple with the legacy of uranium mining. The Old Church Rock Mine, located near the mill site, produced over 316,000 tons of ore between 1957 and 1982. Today, the EPA and the Navajo Nation Environmental Protection Agency are actively managing cleanup efforts at these abandoned sites. In 2026, the EPA reached an agreement with NuFuels Inc. to conduct an interim removal action to stabilize contaminated soil and address ongoing migration of hazardous materials, highlighting the persistent challenge of remediating the Eastern Abandoned Uranium Mine Region.
